Hop Backs

Stout Tanks and Kettles offers Hop Backs, which are used to infuse that amazing hop character you find in many IPAs and Pale Ales.  Like all of our products, we only use sanitary fittings and hardware.  See below for details.  Many sizes and options are possible, if you don't see the size you want, please contact us with your needs.  You will likely need to use nylon hop bags in conjunction with the hop back to keep your filter from getting clogged.

HOP BACKS

Hop backs give your beer fresh hop nose and flavor without significantly affecting bitterness.  They are a great way to improve the flavor and character of your brews.

The hop back is located in-line between the brew kettle and the wort chiller.  The wort flows through the hop back while still near boiling temperature, but does not get exposed to the hops for a long period.  The wort is quickly cooled, ending the isomerization of the hops and limiting the amount of bitterness added to your wort.

1/2 oz. of hops per gallon of wort will generally provide a big hop character (actual results depend on your hops and your brewing processes).

We recommend putting your hops in a nylon or muslin bag to keep them in the hop back and out of your wort chiller or fermenter.
